HIROSHIMA -- A Hiroshima Prefectural Police senior policeman who tried to snatch a woman's handbag from her as she walked along the streets has been arrested, police said.
Kengo Nagata, 25, the policeman, was arrested for attempted theft after he allegedly tried to make a snatch-and-grab on a 24-year-old woman in Hiroshima on Monday.
Police said Nagata rode up behind the woman on his bicycle and snatched at her handbag with the intent of stealing it from her. The bag's strap snapped, however, and he fled without picking it up.
窃盗未遂：２５歳巡査長逮捕 広島
広島県警広島中央署は５日、広島東署特別警ら隊巡査長の永田健剛容疑者（２５）＝広島市中区＝を窃盗未遂容疑で逮捕した。
調べでは、永田容疑者は５日午前４時４０分ごろ、広島市中区の歩道を歩いていた女性（２４）が持っていた手提げかばんを、自転車で追い抜きざまに引ったくろうとした疑い。かばんの持ち手が切れたため、取らずに逃走した。自動車警ら隊員が近くで自転車に乗っているところを発見した。【矢追健介】
