Cop dies after plunging 9 meters from police station

A Tokyo police officer died after falling nine meters from a fifth-floor window at the station where he worked, police said.

Local police are investigating the case, suspecting that the officer, a 53-year-old sergeant at Itabashi Police Station in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo, may have committed suicide. No suicide note has been found.

At around 1:40 p.m. on Monday, the sergeant fell from the window of a changing room on the fifth floor of Itabashi Police Station onto a concrete eave about nine meters below, investigators said.

He was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead about four hours later.

転落死：巡査部長、飛び降り自殺か　警視庁板橋署

　１９日午後１時４０分ごろ東京都板橋区板橋２の警視庁板橋署で、同署地域課の男性巡査部長（５３）が５階更衣室の窓から約９メートル下のコンクリート製のひさしに転落した。巡査部長は全身を強く打ち、約４時間後に死亡が確認された。板橋署は飛び降り自殺を図った可能性もあるとみて調べている。

　調べでは巡査部長は交番勤務で、１９日は午後２時から泊まり勤務だった。更衣室で制服に着替えた直後に転落したとみられる。拳銃など装備品は身につけておらず、靴は自分のロッカーの前に置いてあった。遺書は見つかっていない。更衣室の窓は換気のため開けていたという。【村上尊一】
