HANNAN, Osaka -- A mid-ranking police officer has been arrested for causing a traffic accident while riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Mitsuyoshi Sumida, 54, an assistant inspector at Joto Police Station in Osaka, is accused of violating the Road Traffic Law.
At around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sumida was riding his motorcycle on a municipal road in Hannan when he fell down, crashing the bike into an oncoming car, local police said.
Sumida suffered slight injuries to his face while a 56-year-old woman who was driving the car was not wounded.
Officers took him into custody after a breath test found that he had been riding the motorcycle under the influence of alcohol.
After completing night duty, Sumida drank two cups of sake on a train on his way home at around 2 p.m., and shortly after arriving home, he rode his motorcycle, according to investigators.

２７日午後５時ごろ、大阪府阪南市石田の市道で、同市光陽台、府警城東署地域課警部補、隅田光義容疑者（５４）運転のバイクが転倒して滑走し、対向車線を走っていた市内の主婦（５６）運転の乗用車に衝突した。隅田容疑者は顔に擦り傷の軽傷、主婦にけがはなかった。隅田容疑者から呼気１リットル中０．１５ミリグラムのアルコール分が検出され、府警泉南署が道交法違反（酒気帯び）容疑で現行犯逮捕した。
調べでは、隅田容疑者は宿直明けで帰宅途中の２７日午後２時ごろ、電車の駅でカップ酒２本を飲み帰宅。「用事がある」としてバイクで外出した。
